| 2021-11 | ROYAL ASSENT TO BILL TO DISCONTINUE
WA'S GROUP VOTING TICKETS: The Governor of Western Australia, Hon. Kim Beazley AC, has informed the Parliament of his assent to the above bill. It was also notified in WA's Government Gazette (P. 5229). Victoria's Legislative Council is now the only legislative chamber in the world elected with a GVT device. |
| 2021-05 |
WA GOVERNMENT'S MINISTERIAL EXPERT
COMMITTEE ON ELECTORAL REFORM: The Terms of Reference of the above Committee, which invites submissions by 31 May 2021, focus on concerns about Group Voting Tickets, which neither Western Australia nor Victoria has yet discontinued, although all other mainland Upper Houses have done so. Neither Tasmania nor the Australian Capital Territory's Hare-Clark system has ever used GVTs. PRSA's March 2021 newsletter discusses the problems with WA's GVTs. It also argues for an odd number of Regions, each having an odd number of MLCs, as Victoria entrenched. |
| 2021-01 | REPORT ON 2018 ELECTION TABLED: The report on the conduct of the 2018 Victorian election by the Victorian Parliament's Electoral Matters Committee has been tabled, and the Government's response is awaited. The report's Recommendation 49 is that the Parliament should request the Committee to conduct a further inquiry concentrating on possible reform of the electoral system for the Legislative Council, which was a main concern of many submissions, including that of the PRSAV-T Inc, No.67. |
| 2021-01 | FORMER PRSA NATIONAL PRESIDENT
AWARDED OAM: The PRSA National President 1986-93, Geoffrey Goode, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List this year, for advocacy of electoral reform, as stated in his citation. A video shows his local member, Mr Tim Wilson, MHR for Goldstein, mentioning an email from him when addressing the House of Representatives on his 15 constituents on that list. |
| 2021-01 | DEATH OF MRS NANCYE YEATES: Mrs Nancye Yeates, the first National Secretary of the Proportional Representation Society of Australia, and a former President of its Victorian Branch, died at the age of 91, on 04 January 2021, after a long illness. |
