2022 News
2022-12 JSCEM INQUIRY INTO THE 2022 FEDERAL ELECTION:
The PRSA's Submission No. 323 has appeared on the website of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, which received nearly 1,500 submissions.

2022-12 ALISON HARCOURT IN ARTICLE IN THE AGE:
In an article, "A monumental failure: Where are the women?", the achievements of a long-term PRSA member, Mrs Alison Harcourt AO, were featured. It explained her success in recommending the use of double randomization of names of candidates on House of Representatives ballot papers, and parties on Senate ballot papers.

2022-10 AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC MOVEMENT CLINGS TO SYSTEM ABANDONED IN 1919:
The CBD column in The Age asks the very good question about why the Australian Republic Movement still elects its Board by the multiple plurality voting system that Australia abandoned for the Senate in 1919, because of its gross unfairness.

2022-10 MARTIN LUTHER KING III CALLS FOR USA TO ADOPT AUSTRALIAN VOTING SYSTEM:
Mr King calls for the replacement of the USA's present electoral system with that used for the lower houses in mainland Australia's parliaments, as well as electors' compulsory attendance at a polling booth. Australia has had both for over a century.

2022-09 SUBMISSION COMMENDING TASMANIA'S EXPANSION OF PARLIAMENT BILL 2022:
The PRSA's Victoria-Tasmania Branch lodged the above submission, which is viewable here.

2022-07 REPLIES BY TASMANIA'S PREMIER AND BY ITS OPPOSITION LEADER:
Replies by the Premier, and the Opposition Leader, each pleasingly confirmed their party's support for the restoration of 35 members to the House of Assembly.

2022-06 LETTER TO TASMANIA'S PREMIER SUPPORTING HIS PROPOSAL TO RESTORE ITS HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TO 35 MEMBERS:
See www.prsa.org.au/2022-06-24_prsav-t_inc_tasmania_premier_restoration.pdf. In April 2020, an all-party Select Committee recommended such a restoration.

2022-05 ASSESSMENT OF AUSTRALIA'S FEDERAL ELECTORAL SYSTEM:
The Conversation website has a good article by the PRSAV-T President entitled, "Is our electoral system truly democratic? How Australia stacks up on 4 key measures".

2022-04 WEBINAR WITH PROFESSOR ANDREW SCOTT ON HIS LATEST BOOK:

Andrew Scott, Professor of Politics and Policy of Deakin University, addressed an online seminar on 21 April 2022 - chaired by the President of PRSA’s Victoria-Tasmania Branch, Associate Professor Stephen Morey - on the recent Melbourne University Press book he authored jointly with Rod Campbell entitled, “The Nordic Edge: Policy possibilities for Australia”.

Professor Scott's book advocates Australia's adopting a party list form of proportional representation as used in Scandinavian countries. Those party list systems, details of which are shown in the summary here, differ significantly from the
PR-STV systems adopted by referendums as PRSA and PRSAV-T policy.
